They believe that children have the right to live in a world where they have hope and opportunity. As the UK's leading international children's charity, Save the Children works with children in more than 70 countries worldwide, including the UK.
The more money they raise, the more children they help.
Save the Children use your money to respond to emergencies as well as long-term development and prevention work to help children and their families be self-sufficient. They work to uphold children's rights when no one else will listen.
Help them change a childs future for the better.
Social Protection, Welfare and Inclusion
It is never acceptable for children to be abused or exploited. Save the Children takes steps to prevent and expose abuse whenever possible. Experience tells us that the most deprived and marginalised children are often those most at risk.
They work with children who live apart from their families, either on the streets or in institutions, working children, displaced families and in poor communities to provide protection and support for children at risk. Save the Children's work with police forces, justice ministries, welfare departments and youth workers is to try to make sure that children's best interests are recognised and given priority by governments.
Food, Security and Nutrition
Many factors can conspire to prevent children from having access to the food they need to grow and thrive. Poverty, war and natural disaster all play their part. Understanding and tackling these underlying causes of hunger is as important as providing emergency food aid when and where it is needed.
Save the Children supports measures to prevent malnutrition and ensure children have enough food for proper growth and development. As well as providing food aid in times of crisis, they gather information on food availability and children's nutritional status in vulnerable communities to predict and head off food crises.
Education
Childhood is short. If a child misses out on the chance to learn, their entire future can be put in jeopardy. Education is a powerful tool. It can help children affected by poverty, violence and abuse overcome their experiences and grow into confident, caring and independent adults.
Save the Children would like to make education a possibility for every child. To improve the quality and relevance of education they train teachers and give advice on curriculum. But they are realistic - school isn't the answer for every child. So they provide informal education or the chance to learn a trade as the solution for some young people.
Health
Many millions of children live in countries which can only afford to spend a few pounds per person every year to provide healthcare. It is often rural communities that have least access to doctors, medicines and health education.
Save the Children is responding by helping governments to train their health workers and to provide medicines, equipment and transport. They also help communities to identify and address key health issues and support their initiatives to protect themselves from infection and disease.
HIV/AIDS
In the developing world HIV is a major threat to children's lives and futures. 60% of new HIV infections are in the 15 to 24 age group. And the devastating effect of HIV/AIDS on adult populations has robbed many children of their parents - and communities of the workers they need to remain viable. With no-one to care for them, to raise their food or to educate them, many children's futures hang in the balance.
Western drug treatments are too expensive for the health services of many developing countries. This makes prevention a crucial defence against the virus. Education is key to the HIV/AIDS work Save the Children does. By sharing knowledge about HIV, sexual health and relationships they can equip young people with the skills and understanding to protect themselves from infection.
Children and Work
Poverty means many children have little choice but to work. They are often exploited. Many are sold into prostitution or taken miles from their home to work in appalling conditions for pitifully low wages. Despite this, many children need to work - they know without the money they earn, they might not survive.
Save the Children is working to eradicate the worst forms of child labour but resists bans and boycotting that could put children at greater risk. Instead they try to draw a distinction between work that is not exploitative and harmful and work that is. As a result they work with governments and employers to tackle poverty and child labour in ways that protect children from harm. They support schooling during hours when children aren't working and projects that help older children access better, safer work. They are also finding poor families ways of earning enough money without sending their children out to work.
Help them change a childs future for the better.
